New House Tidbits

We have been in our new house for for 3 days now and things are really starting to come together. I can't wait until I've got the kitchen organized and art hung on the walls. Right now my priority is to get my clothes organized so my sweetie can have his own closet; one that isn't shared by my winter coats or the vacuum cleaner!

Piles of art and "decor" waiting to find permanent homes

Here are some sneak-peak pictures of the new place:

Sunday morning I let the kitties go outside for the first time at the new place. Cecilia never has been much of an outdoorsy girl, but she spent 30 minutes walking the yard. Boris, on the other hand, loves going outside and exploring, and frequently spends his entire day outdoors. I walked next to him while he explored the alley in our backyard and then that little bastard ran off and was missing for over 20 minutes. I've trained them to come to a special whistle, which usually works, but essentially a cat does whatever the hell it wants to even if he hears the "come home" whistle. I found him in a yard off a busy street halfway between the new house and my old apartment. Needless to say, he is currently grounded and his next few trips outside will be on the humiliating leash.

Oscar Schmoscar

It's that time of year, when many of the blogs I follow are posting their Oscar recaps with opinions on the winners and red carpet fashions. While I've never felt compelled to do this myself, this year I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

Sure, I like watching the Oscars, but I prefer to catch parts of the show without actually planning my night around it. I love seeing the dresses and those inevitable celebrity blunders that make the rounds on the internet and tabloid shows. But for me, the one thing I really  love about the Oscars comes the morning after when I troll the internet to find photos of the Vanity Fair party. For whatever reason, my #1 celebrity crush is absent from the paparazzi most of the year, but surfaces every Oscar night even though he's not in the film industry. My favorite thing about the Oscars is Rick Rubin!!

Live your dreams through Photoshop, y'all!

No, you're eyes are not deceiving you. The above photo is, in fact, a picture of Rick Rubin holding the hand of his Brazilian model girlfriend with my head photoshopped on top of her ah-MAZE-ing body. At first I thought this lady was just arm candy and I relished the fact that she was listed as "guest" in any photo captions. But after several years of "stalking" I think it's safe to say she's a permanent fixture and BBC has no cause for concern that I might leave him for Ricky.

5 Facts Friday

  • I finally got my gold nugget Texas ring! I've been looking for one in my size (and price range) since about 2005, and I found this on eBay at bargain basement pricing!
Texas, baby!
  • Tomorrow morning we move! I still have so much work to do and tonight will begin to "breakdown" my apartment and organizing moving zones. I feel stressed, but just need to jump in and tackle it. Fortunately, we will be having friends help, which I'm pretty sure will look like this:
  • Every time I tape up another packed box, I hear this song in my head:

  • One thing I dreaded this Christmas, while visiting BBC's family, was the thought that we might play a game of Scrabble. I'm terrible at Scrabble, frequently get frustrated with all the word options, and am a very sore loser. Thank goodness we didn't play, but as we where packing up to go, Brandon's mom mentioned that we forgot to play Scrabble. Since then I have been practicing by playing Words With Friends and I'm getting much better. I've even won a handful of games! Look out Crowes, I'll be spelling in no time.
  • My sweetie and I will be celebrating our one year anniversary next weekend and it been the best year of my life! We will be celebrating at the end of March with a trip to Marfa.

Moving, Moving, Moving

My sweetie and I are moving into our new house this weekend! I've never been so excited about a move before, but at the same time I'm stressing myself out. It's been over 3 years since I last moved and I feel a little out of practice.

The only thing I've packed so far is my sweater collection. My garage apartment is too tiny to hoard boxes, so pre-packing is kind of hard until we get all the big stuff out. Also, it's kind of hard to transport carloads of clothing and bulky things that won't get packed since I don't actually have a car! I'm hoping to borrow some wheels tonight and tomorrow to start trucking some carloads over. Saturday will be our big moving day and it looks like we will have plenty of friends lending their hands and muscles. And since we're only moving a couple of blocks away, the move should be pretty painless.

Here are some moving tibits:
  • Our new kitchen is nearly three times the size of my tiny, houseboat-sized kitchen, which puts a big smile on my face.
  • The dream couch I had anticipated buying won't fit in our narrow living room, so we will be keeping my current couch for the meantime while reevaluating our needs.
  • I'm in love with the exposed brick wall in our living room!
  • A friend has been painting the bedroom and living room these past two days and I've so pleased with the quality of the work and the colors we chose! It's a lovely light grey with a darker green-hued grey trim. Do you have home maintenance or repairs and need a contractor? Here is his website. Here are the colors we chose:
Wall color: Cathedral Grey
Trim color, Stepping Stones

  • We've decided to mount our TV from the ceiling! The living room is pretty narrow and we have a very limited choice for couch/TV placement, so this is the best option.
  • I hardly ever take showers and primarily take baths, which is why the lack of a bath seems dreadful to me. Luckily, we are going to get one installed shortly after we move in. Dreams do come true!

I can't wait to post some photos and have friends over! So, in anticipation of my busy days ahead of me, my blog will be silent for a wee bit.

And One to Grow On

My birthday is tomorrow!! I will be turning 30 (for the 2nd time) and if it's half as wonderful as this past year has been then I'm in for a treat.

I had such a wonderful birthday bash last year that included an open bar, dancing, a champagne tower, all of my favorite people, rhinestones, and even a hora chair dance celebration. (You can check out the blog post about it HERE.) After last year's epic party, it just doesn't feel right to celebrate this year, so I'm not really going to! I'm taking the day off work and tomorrow I will celebrate Ish's birthday at Kome and Trailer Space, Saturday Gospel Truth is playing at Beerland, and Beth will be hosting a casual birthday brunch in my honor Sunday morning. Thirty one kind of feels like a gyp to me, so I think I will just lay low until I hit the big four-0. However, I'm never above birthday presents, so here's what's on my list:

  • A facial from the beautiful, Ella at Esty

  • To watch the HBO Beyonce documentary, Life is But a Dream  that airs February 16th:

while eating this:

  • Korean BBQ! A couple of months ago I joined Tom Lee and Alan at a friend's house for an amazing Korean BBQ dinner that I have not been able to stop thinking about. I have a need for some delicious meats, kimchis, and Soju. Somebody take me to Korea House.

  • A gold nugget Texas ring

  • A pigeon (I ask for this every year!)

Jules gave me this awesome knit pidge last year!

  • A bunny butt cotton ball dispenser

But in all honestly, I'm given the best present each day by having such wonderful friends and my amazing sweetie. 30 has absolutely wonderful and the best year of my life! Starting tomorrow I'm on a mission to make it the best decade of my life! Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray!

Valentine's, Schmalentine's

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Valentine's Day. I completely understand, and fully support, those who dislike the "Hallmark holiday". However, I don't understand how showering those you love with hearts is a corporate thing.

This year I sent out more Valentines than ever before because I'm lucky enough to have a gaggle of gals that I adore. I'm not impartial, but I think I have the best group of women in my life and letting the people that I love know how I feel about them feels wonderful on both ends. And honestly, giving gifts might be my most favorite thing ever! I've been pretty happy with the response from the valentines I sent out. Here are some pics from the ladies:

Love bombs!

Ladies, are you ready to jump on board the Galentine's Day train?

This will be the first Valentine's Day for my sweetie and I, and I think we are setting a great tradition by not doing anything to celebrate. BBC has picked up a couple of shifts at the floral shop to help deliver flowers and I will be fast asleep when he finishes working. When every day feels like Valentine's Day, what's the point of going to a crowded restaurant or eating heart-shaped boxes of chocolate? I don't even like chocolate! Of course, I made my sweetie a crafty valentine and will probably make some heart-shaped pancakes Saturday morning.

Happy Valentine's Days, lovelies!

P.S. A little love song for your ears

5 Facts Friday

Happy Friday, y'all! Here are some tidbits and such:

  • Beginning March 1st, Austin will be plastic bag free! I think it's great and I already use reusable bags for nearly all of my grocery shopping. However, plastic bags fill a very important need in my life as I reuse any I acquire for scooping the kitty liter box. I'm still not sure how I am going to adjust, but I think buying tiny plastic garbage bags might be my only option. How will you adjust to the plastic bag ban? My friend Julia makes these super cute eco shopping totes that look just like those plastic Thank You bags. You can (and should) buy them HERE and HERE
  • In "My Boyfriend is so Adorable News": I was a little late to the party that is HBO's Girls,  but I finished the first season about a month ago and am currently watching the second season with Lela and the gals. I love it, it's very witty and funny, but my favorite thing about the show is finishing an episode and thinking, "Thank god I'm not 25 anymore!" While I was at work one day, BBC watched all 3 discs in a row and finished the first season in one afternoon. Adorably, he texted me through his viewing to tell me the scenes that he liked best, or to give me some trivia knowledge about Judd Apatow. Earlier this week I came home from a rough day at work and BBC was playing Robyn, Dancing on my Own.  I was instantly uplifted and started dancing. I hugged my sweetie and thanked him for downloading the song for me, to which he replied,  "I downloaded it for myself. When I was watching Girls  I used Shazam to find out what song it was and downloaded it because I really liked it." Isn't he just adorable, y'all!

  • I was one of those day-dreaming children who would gaze off while a song played and imagine that I was in a movie and the music was the sound track of my life. In second grade, this Love and Rockets song was one of my favorites and I decided, that in the movie soundtrack of my life, this song would play whenever I walked into the classroom of a new school. Naturally, I would walk in slow motion with a fan blowing my hair, and all the young boys would fall in love with me.

  • BBC and I have finally picked out our new couch! I'm really excited because I've always wanted a sectional with a chaise lounge and I think the dark grey will be perfect. No more covering my dusty old couch with pretty blankets!

These pillows will have to go!
  • I decided that if my cats were drag queens, their names would be Velvet and Chenille instead of Boris and Cecilia. And more importantly, I think this is one of the most brilliant thoughts I've ever had!

Happy February

Happy February, y'all! This month marks the end of my first year of 30. I say first year, because I will be 30 for the next 5 years and in a few short days, I will begin my second 30th year. If it is half as good as this past year was, I'm in for a real treat!

In honor of my thirties, and upcoming birthday, I will spend the next few days making a list of 30 wonderful things that happened to me this past year.

Scratch that! While I was starting my list, I realized I just made a list of wonderful things from this past year last month. (HERE) It would just be a repeat of that last times 3. This past year has been exceptional day after day. 30-Wonderful!

5 Beyonce Facts Friday

Ladies and gentleman, I don't think I've ever been in such a great mood while at work on a Friday afternoon. I just had an lovely lunch with JJ, Beth, and Gina at Easy Tiger and I will be leaving the office early today to show my apartment to potential new tenants (even though I have my fingers crossed that Bridget will be getting the apartment). I don't have any exciting plans this weekend, except to watch Beyonce perform during the Super Bowl halftime show, but that's pretty exciting in and of itself. Without further ado, here are some Beyonce themed things for your Friday afternoon:

  • I watched this yesterday and cried

  • I told my sweetie that I wanted Beyonce dance lessons for my birthday and I wasn't joking. I think, however, that this may be the closest to the real thing that I will get: 47 of Beyonce's Absolute Best Dance Moves!
  •  Here's an old school ghetto B throwback

  • In super gushy girly news, this is the song I will walk down the aisle to when my sweetie and I get married:
  • Darn, I don't have a 5th Beyonce thing!! I guess this works: at my birthday party last year, Gina gave me a sparkly convenience store ring while we were on the dance floor getting down to Single Ladies,  and that was pretty amazing!
