A Memorable Memorial Day

I had a lovely 3-day weekend and would like to thank Memorial Day for the extra day.

Friday night Jacob celebrated his birthday at Rio Rita a couple days early, as that jet setter will be in Iceland for his actual birthday. JJ and I weren't really feeling the late night party and left early, but not before stopping off at the White Horse so I could buy a pair of boots off the bartender. When you wear a size 10, you jump at shoe opportunities as they arrive and Lori was selling a beautiful pair of cognac Frye campus boots for a fraction of their value.

Saturday night I helped the BF tend bar at the Austin Variety Show. It's kind of a strange event: in the deserted Highland Mall, free beer and food, game show, comediennes, live music.... I didn't do much more than pump a keg and pass out beer, but it was still exhausting. I joked about it being, "bring your girlfriend to work day," and I'm now in full support of going to work with your BF/GF to get a better idea of what they do; it was pretty informative. My man is serious about his job, means business, works hard, and at nearly 40 he has more energy than I can pretend to! I ended up bailing on him around midnight and slept in the car until he finished up.

Sunday I only left the house to get a pedicure with Pam. It was a gloriously lazy day in bed.

I grew up in Galveston County and spent 3 childhood years in Florida, so I'm a water baby through and through. The perfect summer day for me is a day at the beach with a cooler full of beer and snacks, and that is exactly how I spend Monday. BBC and I met Emily J., Josh, Karen, Letty, Truman, McVay, Gina, and crew at Austin's premier "secret beach," which isn't much of a secret, but is a lovely little sand beach off the Colorado Riverbed. We narrowly escaped the sunburn, but the inch worms and bugs were out in full force. I was attacked by this a prehistoric beetle:

It was a perfect Memorial Day, until Gina and I saw a huge snake in the water. We weren't wasting any time getting out of the river when the man holding the snake clarified that he didn't find it in the water, but rather it was his pet. I still couldn't get back in the water....

Trapped in Ladies Movie Night

Last night I hosted what perhaps was the most ridiculous ladies movie night yet. We watched R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet, drank champagne and Arbor Mist, and dined on Church's finest fried chicken. I'm not really a chicken eater, but words cannot express the mouthwatering deliciousness of fried chicken skin! I love it so much that I ate the skin straight off of Julia's plate (she's more in control of her diet than I am). Last night was Bridget and Anne's first movie night and our "film" couldn't have been more appropriate. Yes, we watched all 22 chapters! Poor Gina and Emily J. didn't realize it was a rock opera, but quickly caught onto the lyrical genius of R. Kelly's same word rhyming: closet with closet, club with club, gun with gun... We did have a drinking game planned, but if we drank every time someone was actually in a closet none of us would have been able to walk at the end of the night.

Letty and I are completely sold on the idea of creating a stage version of Trapped in the Closet, but decided our Austin version should be multicultural with the role of country bumpkin Bridget being played by an Asian. I, of course, called dibs on the role of the lesbian diner cook and Tuan tattle-tale, Roxanne.

By the end of the night, we were all talk-signing in tune with R. Kelly's diction, but fortunately this morning the music and rhythm has escaped my memory and I can live my life without repeating the last word of my sentences with fading out harmonies.

So, in review, here are some of my favorite moments:
My favorite chapter is 13 and the musicality of the ending gives me goosebumps..... "Girl, that hoe is meeee-eeeeh"

So, in the end everyone gets the "package." What the hell is the package?! Ladies night consensus is AIDS. I'm going to have to do some google research to confirm.

Ladies and gentlemen, you too can watch this epic rap opera, which is available in it's entirety through Netflix. The BF watched it the day before the ladies did and he, too, was a little hooked on the rhythm. Also, as sweet as he is, he recommended that we have cherry pie at our ladies movie potluck since the desert is featured as a plot twister. He's great, he's all mine, and I'm completely smitten!

Friday Facts

Here are some spellbinding facts about yours truly:
  • I am gaining weight like crazy, you guys! Is it acceptable to blame this on steroids again? For once in my life, I'd like to not be at my annual fattest during the summertime.
  • I have a history of falling asleep in public places. Namely, if there is a couch and if I've been drinking. Here is some photographic evidence:

05.11.2012 Sleeping at Trailer Space with BBC

07.2011 Fast asleep at Small Bar in Philadelphia

04.2011 Fell asleep at Gina's during our ladies dance party

  •  Last night at the ND, Julia and I had delicious cocktails! My favorite was the Win Win, which had vodka, Topo Chico, cranberry juice, lemon juice, and a packet of Emergen-C. It was fizzy, tasted like a sweet tart, and put pep in my step.
  • I have an extra ankle on my left foot! It makes finding a great pair of cowboy boots hard, but other than that there isn't a single negative aspect to this. In fact, I've been complimented by grandpas for having lovely ankles many times.
  • I can't figure out if I love this music video or am outrageously freaked out by it, but it pumps me up (and Truman loves the beat too).

  •  For reasons unknown, I decided to buy and wear a cardigan today that is a size 1XL. I look ridiculous!

Man of the House

My wedding hook-up, turned accidental BF, turned official boyfriend has become a lovely little housewife of sorts. While I'm at work he washes the dishes, makes the bed, takes care of my kitties, takes out the garbage, and today he is doing my laundry. Last week he thought my toilet was filthy and cleaned it! He's the sweetest man I've ever known and I love it.

Okay, that's all for now, I'm too busy being smitten.

Tuesday Tidbits

  • I'm getting a little bit blog lazy.... perhaps I will only have tidbits on Tuesdays... we'll see...
  • New favorite Beach Boys song:

  • I'm in a terrible mood. Sometimes complaining helps to vent, but this time it doesn't feel appropriate. Just another case of the medical blues, I suppose, and a better realization that I'm going to be permanently sick.
  • So far, two of my anticipated summer shows have been cancelled or rescheduled: Lil Kim and Jesco White. Dear Robyn, if you cancel I'm not entirely sure I will be able to survive.
  • This past Saturday was a ladies night twenty years in the making. Ella, Audra, Pam, Anne, Tofte, Najia... close to 10 of us pounded shots of tequila while dancing our asses off to Salt N Pepa until the early hours of the morning. I'll tell you, those ladies still have it! I, however, had a two day hangover, but still wouldn't have changed a thing! Thank you to my bootay babes for making it a night I'll never forget.

Selling Out in Style

It's an LD blogging first!!! I have both a product review AND a giveaway (comment below to win).

Suave Keratin Infusion dry shampoo

Amazon and Suave sent me two bottles of Suave's new Keratin Infusion dry shampoo. I haven't yet jumped onto the dry shampoo boat, but I've certainly been toying with the idea of becoming a dry shampoo supporter. Typically I wash my hair two or three times a week, but always have those in between days where my hair looks sloppy and gross. My solution has always been a peppy ponytail and a quick bang washing in the sink. Dry shampoo has been getting rave reviews as the cure for bad hair days and I have a handful of lady friends who swear by it.

Suave's Keratin Infusion dry shampoo is the 2nd brand of dry shampoo I've tried and I'm SOLD! My first experience was with Bumble and Bumble's Hair Powder in brown, and while I really liked it, there was NO WAY in hell I would pay $35 for 4 ounces of the stuff. Suave's Keratin Infusion dry shampoo even references the Bumble and Bumble product on their container as their main competitor and after using this product I understand why. It's the same quality for a 10th of the price tag!

I screwed up by not taking a "before" photo, but this is how my hair looks when it's in desperate need of washing:

Sweaty SXSW bangs and cocktails with Emily J.

The product is simple to use. Just hold the nozzle about 8 inches away from your head, spray your greasy roots in the same fashion you would spray hairspray, and gently brush through your hair with your fingers to blend. Whenever I used the Bumble and Bumble product, it left a large brown spray paint area in my bangs and my fingers were stained after blending it through my hair; not a sexy look. Suave's Keratin Infusion left no white powder and blending wasn't even necessary.  The result:

Happy hair

I was hoping to have a "pros and cons" section of my review, but honestly I can't think of a single negative thing about this product. It's easy to use, made my hair look and feel as if it had just been shampooed and blown dry, smelled as pleasant as a dryer sheet, didn't leave any powdery residue, and only costs $3.49 for 5 ounces. The days of drippy wet bangs being washed in the sink while I'm running late for work are over. I'm a Suave Keratin Infusion dry shampoo girl from now on.

Honestly ladies, this is a completely unbiased review of my new favorite beauty product and I couldn't be more excited to give one of you a free bottle. So, please leave a comment below and tomorrow at noon I will randomly select the winner.  In the meantime, you can buy the product directly from Amazon here and I'll see what I can do to get a free case for a lazy ladies beauty night.

Thursday Tidbits

  • Yesterday morning before heading to work, I threw a huge chunk of meat in the crockpot, added some wine, worcestershire, carrots, taters, and an onion and let that sucker cook for 10 hours. I know, I know.... it's called a pot roast and people have been nom-ing on that shit for decades. Last night at ladies movie night we devoured it and I'm officially convinced that it is the only food I should ever cook again.
  • It's peach season! Get ready for spiced, pickled peaches, y'all. I'm going to have to send a few jars to Emily O. who likes to eat them with oatmeal. Holla at me if you want some too.
  • I'm getting another tattoo! (That exclamation mark is sarcastic) I won a gift certificate in January from my tattoo girl, Billy Baca at Bijou, at a charity auction for Esme. For a while I've been going back and forth about what to get. Originally, I wanted this adorable cat pinup,

but now I've decided to go for a traditional, super flat, cat head! I'm waiting for my
consultation appointment, but in the meantime, here's my pin board of reference
images. I don't necessarily want the headdress, but something similar and cute with
          my Cecilia's face!

  • Many of my friends know that for the last 5 or 6 years I've been aggressively paying off credit card debt that was impressively earned during my college years.  The total was extreme and I've paid about $10,000 per year since I first moved to Austin. Well..... I'm Done!!!!!! This month I paid off my last credit card. I should have cried, I should have celebrated, but instead I got a new credit card. Don't worry, I learned my lesson; being broke and working two jobs for 6 years will do that to a girl. So, watch out ladies: I now have the extra cash to join you girls for happy hour and buy cute shoes.
  • I'm itching for this weekend! It's Audra's birthday and we'll be having a Nasty Girls Club meeting all weekend long! Happy hours, Lil Kim, mimosa brunches, day drinking, Salt N Pepa... it's gonna be a scandalous blast and I can't wait!

Tidbits From the Weekend

  • Cinco de Mayo started early this year! (About 3pm on Friday the 4th) BBC, Emily J., Josh, and I filled our faces with chips, guacamole, queso, salsa, and plenty of delicious margaritas. Then I went home to do this with the kitties:

  • Saturday Jessica and I inspired an early morning meet up at Tamale House before hitting up the Blue Hanger for some much needed thrifting. Matt, JJ, BBC, Jessica, and I chomped down on tacos and Frito pie at 9am, even though BBC and I didn't get to sleep until 6am from the night before! The BF was a zombie, but I think my brain is fueled by Frito pie and tall boys, so I was definitely ready to kick-start the day. The best part of our breakfast, hands down, was bumping into Cara, Matt, and Posey. I haven't seen sweet Po in so long and that little cutie has gotten big!
  • Cinco de Derby? Derby de Mayo? BBC took me to a combo Kentucky Derby/Cinco de May party Saturday afternoon: pinatas, fancy hats, tamales, cucumber sandwiches, and the most delicious frozen mint margaritas. I walked in expecting to know only few people there, but ended up finding some of my favorite people lounging in the back yard: Karen, Truman, Letty, and Chad.

  • I made a delicious breakfast (including mimosas), eaten in bed, Sunday morning:
Cheese grits topped with ham, fried egg, and scallions

  •  Here, look at this photo of BBC and me watching Karen, Letty, and the gang playing kickball. Sunday was absolutely beautiful so we spent the day at the park, followed by some swimming. Happy weekends make for a happy girl...

Welp, I've officially got a boyfriend now.... no longer just an accidental BF. He makes the bed, washes the dishes, rubs my back, and thinks I'm pretty.
